Proposed cancer centre at AMCH a distant dream

DIBRUGARH, July 16 - The proposed strengthening of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) here as Tertiary Care Cancer Centre with financial assistance of up to Rs 45 crore (including State share) under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (NPCDCS), has remained a distant dream due to the apathy of the premiere medical institute and the State government.

In a communication to a petitioner, advocate Gonesh Gohain Phukan, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India responded that AMCH was identified by the Ministry for a Tertiary Care Cancer Centre. A proposal was examined by the Directorate General of Health Services and the deficiencies therein were communicated to the institute and the State government but the Ministry has not received any response so far, the communication read.
