Prominent artistes join Congress

GUWAHATI, Dec 30 � The ruling Congress today received a boost with several prominent personalities, including retired bureaucrats, joining the party.

Prominent actor Nipon Goswami, retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers Birbhadra Hagjer and Md Alauddin, former general secretary of the Assam Tea Tribes Students� Association Pallab Lochan Das and former leader of the Darrang district unit of the BJP, RK Hazarika joined the Congress in presence of APCC president Bhubaneswar Kaita in a meeting held at the Rajiv Bhawan today. Senior Congress leaders, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Narah, were present in the function.

Meanwhile, commenting on the event, APCC general secretary Dr Haren Das said that the Congress has been able to reach out to cross sections of the society. He pointed out that artists and even former bureaucrats joined the party today, which would give a boost to the party�s strength in the days to come. However, he refused to comment on whether the persons who joined today would be given party ticket to contest in the next Assembly polls.

It may be mentioned here that Nipon Goswami has already expressed his desire to contest the polls from Tezpur Assembly constituency.

The APCC will start inviting applications from those willing to contest the elections after the Magh Bihu.
