Project on mass awareness of Astronomy

GUWAHATI, May 8 � The Statewide project on mass awareness of Astronomy, covering all the districts of Assam, initiated under the joint auspices of the Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers� Association (PRAG), was formally Inaugurated and launched by Bijaylakshmi Baruah Gogoi, ACS, the Director of Guwahati Planetarium and Joint Secretary to Govt of Assam, Science & Technology Department in the Conference Hall of the Planetarium on May 4, stated a press release.

The ceremony of the launching of the project was a part of the three-day Astronomy activity training workshop in which participants from all the districts of the State consisting of teachers, scholars and science communicators participated.

Gogoi in her speech, as the chief guest of the occasion, appreciated the joint initiative of the Guwahati Planetarium and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers� Association for organizing the project, which was encouraged by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of Assam.

The Guwahati Planetarium, over the years has been a part of such programmes related to Astronomy including special events like �Transit of Venus�, �Total Solar Eclipse� and many national-level workshops in collaboration with Vigyan Prasar, DST, Govt of India and PRAG in addition to holding scientific colloquiums on Astronomy and Space Science-related subjects, delivered by eminent scientists, regular sky watching programmes in its premises. She expressed her happiness that the planetarium has created the right kind of ambience for such programmes and activities. She wished that the project launched would make a great success at the grassroots in all the districts under the leadership of the Master Resource Persons in association with members of PRAG and other scientific organizations and institutions.

The function was also addressed by the guest of honour Dr KC Bhattacharya, founder director of North East Space Application Centre. With his long experience of working with the ISRO during which he made significant contributions to India�s space explorations, Dr Bhattacharya wished that it would be in the fitness of things if such workshops and special events are organized by the PRAG in association with the Guwahati Planetarium periodically.

Dr AK Goswami, president of PRAG and chairman of the session mentioned that PRAG is planning to celebrate the centenary of Einstein�s General Theory of Relativity which falls in the current year.
