By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Aug 1 - Royal Global University (RGU) here organised an event titled Responsible use of online platform - The Legal Perspectives on Saturday, where Justice N Kotiswar Singh of the Gauhati High Court; Vijay Hansaria, senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India and Member of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Sneha Kalita, Advocate on Record, Supreme Court of India, were the speakers.

Justice Singh said even as the internet, mobile phones and social media are transforming peoples way of communication in an unprecedentedly big way, guidelines/articles too are in existence to keep a check on the malafide use of those media.

The internet via online platforms and intermediaries enables extreme cases of criminality, hate speech, targeted fake news, illegal lobbying and unprecedented thefts of personal data, Justice Singh pointed out. But the concept that an intermediary is only a neutral pipeline for information is no longer sacrosanct, he added. In many countries, new laws make the social media platform liable for the content they carry, he said.

Advocate Hansaria spoke on the bane and boon of internet and social media. Easy access to social media enables people to post information without understanding its ramifications. He said the Information Technology Act, 2000 makes one liable should any incriminating or illegal content or material be posted on social media.

Advocate Kalita spoke on some forms of cyber crime. She highlighted cyber stalking, phishing attacks etc., and how to file a complaint/report.
