Prog on livestock, dairy development

GUWAHATI, July 2 - A daylong session on �Livestock, poultry, dairy and fishery development in Assam� organised by the State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam, in association with Assam Agricultural University was held at the Assam Administrative Staff College here today.

Dipok Kumar Barthakur, Vice Chairman of SITA, inaugurated the session.

In his speech as the chief guest, Barthakur said that the idea of this brainstorming session is to make a critical analysis of the situation to boost the morale of the agrarian community to adopt animal husbandry and fishery as a vibrant commercial activity in the State and to transform the backyard allied activities of animal husbandry into a lucrative proposition.

He said that all have a big role to play to make the State self-sufficient in all the products of livestock and that there is a lot of scope to double the farmers� income and create employment generation through animal husbandry and pisciculture. This, he said, can be done by providing scientific inputs to farmers. In pisciculture also, there is scope for development with vast resources in the form of a large number of water bodies in the State, he opined.

�We need to give only the scientific strategies and good management plans to the farming communities,� he added.

Others who spoke in the inaugural session included VS Bhaskar, Additional Chief Secretary, Govt of Assam, and Dr KM Bujarbaruah, Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University.
