Prof Ratan Kotokey passes away

DIBRUGARH, Sept 28 - Dr Ratan Kumar Kotokey, former Principal of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and a well-known litterateur and poet passed away early today in the Covid-19 ICU unit of the very institute he studied in and served. He was 67.

Apart from being a good physician and teacher, Dr Kotokey took keen interest in literary activities. He authored several books. He also went on to attain PhD from the Department of Assamese, Dibrugarh University.

Mourning his death, Dibrugarh University too expressed condolences. The medical fraternity while expressing their grief termed it as unfortunate that amicable personality Dr Kotokey contracted Covid-19 and passed away.

According to Dr UT Bhuyan of AMCH, Dr Kotoky was at the forefront as a student, both in school as well as in college. In college, he was always there as a faculty member in every literary committee, leading from the front. He regularly published articles on medical as well as non-medical subjects.

Dr Ratan Kumar Kotokey completed schooling from Dibrugarh Boys� Higher Secondary School in 1969 and went on to join Assam Medical College from where he got the MBBS degree in 1975. He then joined this prestigious institute as Resident House Physician of Medical Unit-1. He was subsequently selected for the post graduate course and received the degree of MD (General Medicine).

He then joined as Registrar of Cardiology at Assam Medical College later moving on as Registrar of Medicine. Subsequently, he was promoted to Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor and Head in the same department. The pinnacle of his service career was his elevation to head his alma mater as Principal cum Chief Superintendent, said Dr UT Bhuyan.
