Prof Mohd Taher memorial lecture

GUWAHATI, April 23 - The third Professor M Taher Memorial Lecture, commemorating the 87th birth anniversary of late Dr Mohammed Taher, retired Professor and Head, Department of Geography, Gauhati University, was held in the AT Conference Hall, GU, on Saturday, stated a press release issued today.

Dr RK Ranjan Singh, a geographer and former Registrar of Manipur University, delivered the memorial lecture on �Evolution of the Loktak Lake and its ecological dilemma�.

Former Vice Chancellor Professor HL Duarah inaugurated the memorial meet. The programme, organised by the Prof M Taher Memorial Committee, Department of Geography, GU, was attended by members of Geography fraternity, members of Gauhati University family, and well-wishers and members of Late Prof Taher�s family.

In the beginning, Prof Bimal K Kar, secretary, welcomed all present in the meet and spoke about the activities of the memorial committee. Presided over by Prof Abani K Bhagabati, the meet was graced by Dr MC Bhuyan, former Registrar, GU, and Dr NN Bhattacharyya and Dr HN Sharma, retired professors of Geography, GU.

The Prof M Taher Memorial Innovate (Motivate) Fellowship, instituted by the committee, was also announced in the meet and given away to Jyotisma Keot, a second semester student, and M Bijoy Singh, a PhD research scholar, Department of Geography, GU, for the year 2017-18.

Further, a book entitled Population, Environment and Emerging Challenges, edited by Dr Bimal K Kar and Dr Prasanta Bhattacharya, was released by Prof HN Sharma. The programme, anchored by Prof Madhushree Das, came to an end with a vote of thanks offered by Dr Prasanta Bhattacharya and a chorus Ami abhijatri composed by Dr M Taher and presented by students of the Department of Geography, GU.
