GUWAHATI, June 10 - Veteran journalist and educationist Prof Bhairab Sarma passed away at his Madhyamkhanda, North Guwahati residence on Tuesday.

He was 84 and had been ailing for some time.

A pioneer in the field of journalism and higher education in North Guwahati, Prof Sarma was one of the founder professors of North Guwahati College and president of North Guwahati Sahitya Sabha besides heading several journalist bodies.

Prof Sarma, who served as the North Guwahati Correspondent of The Assam Tribune since 1959 till his death played a key role in developing journalism in greater North Guwahati area. A cultural activist, he acted in a number of plays.

Born in 1936, Prof Sarma retired as Head of the Dept of Economics at North Guwahati College and also served at several educational institutions post-retirement.

He leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son.

Various organizations including North Guwahati Sahitya Sabha, Anundoram Smriti Sangrakshan Samiti, Kamrup Zila Sangbadik Sanstha, North Guwahati Journalists� Forum, etc., have condoled his death.
