Prof Amalendu Guha�s death condoled

GUWAHATI, May 13 � The faculty members, students, research scholars and employees of the Department of History, Dibrugarh University, condoled the sad demise of Professor Amalendu Guha, noted scholar and historian of Assam, a press release stated.

Recollecting the contributions of Prof Guha in the field of historical research and social studies, Prof Jahnabi Gogoi Nath, Head of the Department of History, mentioned that Prof Guha was the main force behind advancement of the Marxist school or historical studies in Assam. In essence Prof Guha has been considered the father figure of left historical studies in Assam. Besides being a historian of national stature Prof Guha was at the same time a social scientist of repute and a well known poet. Guha�s historical research in medieval and early colonial Assam finds recognition among all classes of historians and social scientists in India and abroad.

Prof D Nath in his condolence speech reflected on Amalendu Guha�s standing as a reputed historian of international stature whose works find reference even in the writings of such philosopher-cum-historian as Marc Bloch and Fernand Braudel. His study of the Mayamara Vaishnavism and the Moamariya Rebellion, and the Ahom and the rice economy of Assam are treated as path-breaking in the field of historical research in Assam.

Prof Nath further mentioned that Prof Amalendu Guha was associated with Dibrugarh University on many occasions. He presided over the second annual conference of the North East India History Association held at Dibrugarh University in 1981. Prof Guha visited the Department of History on a few occasions as visiting professor and was closely associated with the Shri Shri Aniruddhadeva Chair almost since inception.

Considering his contribution towards historical studies in Assam and in recognition of his extraordinary scholarship Professor Guha was felicitated by Dibrugarh University on behalf of the Shri Shri Aniruddhadeva Chair in 2014. The members of the department considered his death an irreparable loss to the scholarly world and to the discipline of History in the country. They observed one minute silence prayer and offered heartfelt condolences to Anima Guha and other family members and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul, the release added.
