Problems plaguing Rly HS school

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - Railway Higher Secondary School, Maligaon, the one and only Assamese medium school is reeling under a number of problems.

According to a source at the school, the main problem afflicting the school is shortage of teaching staff. This has badly hit the academic pursuits of the students. From primary level to higher secondary level, the school has around 900 students and against there are only 27 permanent teachers.

Altogether 18 posts of teachers from primary to higher secondary level are lying vacant in our school. The crisis of teaching staff is not new, rather it has been continuing for the last several years. It has caused immense harm in the learning process of students, a teacher of the school said.

From time to time the authorities concerned do appoint contractual teachers for a period of few months. But such measures also create hurdles in the learning process of students, especially in the lower primary level.

Poor infrastructure is another major problem being faced by the school. According to a teacher, the condition of some classrooms is so pathetic that in case of any disaster, serious damage could be caused to them.

Recently, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Parishad (AJP) had approached the General Manager of NF Railway with a memorandum citing the deplorable condition of the auditorium of the school.

In the memorandum, the organisation stated that the auditorium has no ceiling, no ceiling fan, no microphone or sound system and no sitting arrangement for both audience and on the stage.

According to sources, the NF Railway provides a fund to the school on yearly basis, but it is not enough to develop its infrastructure.
