Probe ordered into custodial death of woman

GUWAHATI, July 6 � NMASF Haque, Jt Commissioner of Police, Guwahati has been entrusted with the responsibility of probing into the death of a woman in Dispur police station last night and submit a report within 48 hours.

Victoria Dayoun Kharkongor of Meghalaya died in Dispur police station yesterday and the Commissioner of City Police, Mukesh Agarwala ordered the probe and to fix responsibility for lapses, if any.

A release issued by the CPRO, Assam Police said that yesterday at 8:30 pm a security supervisor � Sarat Ch Bordoloi of International Hospital appeared at the Dispur police station and informed that a woman named Victoria Dayoun Kharkongor, aged around 39 years, daughter of Stephen Pyngrope of 16 (a) Nongrimbah West, Shillong was found in a restless condition. Immediately, Officer-in-Charge of Dispur police station deputed WSI Priti Rekha Talukder, SI Sanjib Chetri and WHG Amazon Nessa to enquire into the matter.

On their arrival at the hospital, the attending doctor handed over the lady to the police with a report and she was brought to the police station. Around 10:20 pm the lady went to the toilet attached to the police station but when she did not come out of the toilet, the PS staff broke open the door and found her hanging inside the toilet.

Immediately she was brought to the GMCH at 10:45 pm but the attending doctor declared her brought dead. A hand bag with a PAN card and Electoral Registration Card and other items were found, from which her identity could be ascertained.

Senior Police Officials of the Police Commissionerate including CP, Guwahati arrived at the Dispur PS immediately to take stock of the situation.
