Probe ordered against police officer for outraging girls modesty

By ANN Service

JORABAT, Feb 8 - Following an order from the Police Commissioner, ADCP Vivekananda Das arrived at Khetri to inquire into the alleged outraging of the modesty of a female NCC cadet of Dimoria College by the Officer-in-charge of Khetri Police Station.

The incident came to light when a Facebook post by a local resident went viral, where it was mentioned that the NCC cadet in uniform who was on her way to college, was molested in public on Tuesday morning by Girindra Nath Deka, Officer-in-charge of Khetri PS. Deka allegedly pulled the NCC cadet and put his hands in to check whether or not her belt was properly secured to her pants.

The harassed cadet was left red-faced, but she was scared of raising her voice against the police officer.

The post also revealed a previous case, when a girl cadets belt opened up in public when Deka did the same thing to her.

The victim, while corroborating the Facebook post, said that the Khetri OC (Deka) had indulged in similar shameful acts with girl cadets on two earlier occasions.

Soon after the incident was highlighted in the electronic media this afternoon, the Police Commissioner ordered an inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Dimoria unit of the All Assam Students Union has demanded an unbiased inquiry and immediate suspension of the Khetri OC.

Sources informed that the Girindranath Deka was posted as OC of Khetri PS almost four years back and he has not been transferred to any other place as he has managed the higher authorities.

On the other hand, the local residents had also complained in writing to the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police on March 7 last year that Deka had formed a nexus with people involved in illegal activities in the region by allowing them a safe haven.

Many other allegations were also made by the residents against Deka, like drinking on duty, demanding bribe from the poor people and abusing women coming to the police station for help. They had demanded suspension of the officer, but no action was taken against him.

Dibyajyoti Medhi, adviser to the Dimoria unit of AASU said that an officer who, instead of protecting the society, indulges in immoral activities like molesting women, is not acceptable to society. He demanded immediate suspension of Deka.

If Deka is not suspended immediately, the region will witness a strong protest, which can turn into economic blockade, Medhi warned.

Besides the Dimoria unit of AASU, the Jorabat Branch Students Union along with the local public also condemned the police officers outrageous act and demanded strict action against him.
