Probe into kerosene blasts demanded

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Aug 27 Calling on the Centre to take the incidence of explosion of kerosene lamps and stoves seriously, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has demanded an inquiry into the matter, and to despatch a high-level expert group to assess the situation.

Making a mention in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday, Kumar Deepak Das urged the Central Government to sanction adequate compensation to those families which are affected by the explosions.

The incidence of kerosene lamp and stove explosions has taken place in Dhubri, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Karbi Anglong and Kamrup districts and is spreading to other districts.

Till now, more than 20 persons died and more than 100 persons injured. Most of the people belong to BPL and minority community. Out of that, most of them are women. Those families which are affected have no electricity facility, he said.

Most of them cant afford the electricity facility. Various district authorities have passed a ban on the use of kerosene. But the authorities did not make any alternative arrangement for the benefit of the BPL people, the AGP MP said.

The local authorities of the Petroleum Ministry or the PSUs, who are looking after the production and distribution of kerosene, are not taking this issue seriously, Das alleged.
