JORHAT, June 23 - A State Bank of India (SBI) customer here pertaining to the Jorhat branch was reportedly defrauded of Rs 26,000 a few days back under mysterious circumstances which has baffled officials of the bank.
A case (No.1447/2018) under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC was registered at the Jorhat Police Station in this connection on Monday.
A senior SBI official said that from preliminary inquiry it was found that money of the customer named Tapan Bordoloi of Phukan Ali here, was transferred in four instalments on Sunday and Monday after linking Aadhaar card of a person from Andhra Pradesh to the SBI account of Bordoloi.
The Aadhaar card of the person residing in Andhra Pradesh was linked to Bordoloi's account on July, 2017. The person in Andhra Pradesh had transferred the money through a customer service point through Aadhaar card to the SBI account of Madar Vali Shaik in the Yerraguntla branch of Andhra Pradesh, the SBI official said.
�At SBI customer service points in rural areas, money can be transferred by a biometric test through Aadhaar cards�, he added. �We are surprised as how could Aadhaar of another person residing in a distant State get linked to Bordoloi�s account,� the bank official said. �Only a thorough investigation into the matter will be unearth how the incident occurred�.
The official further said that Aadhaar linkage was supposed to be very secure as even if there was a spelling error, the linkage failed to take place. Bordoloi said that as soon as he received an SMS on his cell phone on Sunday regarding the transfer of Rs 10,000 from his account, he immediately rang SBI�s toll free number and blocked his ATM and changed his netbanking code.
However, subsequently another Rs 10,000 was withdrawn and then Rs 1,000 again. As Bordoloi rushed to the SBI the next day to know how his money was getting withdrawn, he was shocked when in front of the SBI officials who were checking his account, another Rs 5,000 got transferred out of the account. An officer of Jorhat Police Station said investigation into the case has begun.
In another incident, a bag containing Rs 6 lakh reportedly disappeared from the car of a father son duo named Hemkanta Hazarika and Jadumoni Hazarika of Choladhara, here on Wednesday morning.
Hemkanta Hazarika, an octogenarian and a retired employee of ONGC along with his son had come to the UBI�s Tarajan branch and reportedly withdrew the money.
In the complaint to the police, Jadumoni stated that the bag containing money went missing from the car when he went to bring his father from the bank.
The Officer-in-Charge of Jorhat Police Station Hemen Das said investigation into the case was already under way.
Mini-truck stolen: A mini-truck was reportedly stolen in broad daylight from Fasi Ali area here on Thursday.
The owner of the vehicle Bhola Mahato lodged an FIR at the Jorhat Police Station in this regard.
