Probe demanded into stone-pelting at Cotton College

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 13 - The Cotton College Union Society today said that if the students of the college are found guilty in the August 11 clash between the students and cab drivers, they should be punished, but simultaneously it demanded an enquiry into the incident of stone-pelting at the college building on August 12, alleging the involvement of a journalist from a private news channel.

Addressing the media here, the CCUS general secretary Amlanjyoti Deuri said that both the incidents were condemnable and enquiry committee was formed by the college authorities immediately after the incident to look into the involvement of the students.

However, he alleged that the situation took an uglier turn after an electronic media journalist incited the cab drivers to attack the college building on August 12. He also asserted that the same journalist misbehaved with the superintendent of the MNDP hostel of Cotton College.

Police has the footage and evidences of the incidents and the truth would come to light during investigation. But, in the next days event, a deliberate attempt to create chaos in Cotton College must also be thoroughly investigated, he added.

Earlier, teachers of the college, including Cotton College Teachers Association general secretary Arup Hazarika, president Garima Kalita and senior teachers Dr Gautam Sarma and SK Baishya, among others, urged the media to present a balanced report of the entire incident.

The college also acknowledged the need to develop the campuses of college hostels with adequate security and necessary provisions like cafeteria, so that the students do not go outside the campuses at night.

Cotton College does not just belong to the college teachers and students; rather, it is an institution close to the heart of every Assamese. While it is necessary to highlight the negative aspects of the institution, if any, degrading the image of the entire college due to the misdeed of a few students is also not fair, stated the teachers.
