SIVASAGAR, July 26 - Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has alleged that rampant corrupt practices are being carried on by the police personnel at Nazira model police station since a long time.
Following a audio clip that went viral in the social media recently, Saikia has demanded a probe into the allegations of police personnel demanding money from accused persons. He said that he had long been raising the issue of police excesses on the general public during the pandemic period even in the Assembly and the Nazira and Simaluguri polices nexus with the illegal stone and coal quarry owners in Santok and Bihubor areas on the Assam-Nagaland border.
He also said that Nazira police has failed to take any step in controlling drug peddlers, who have been creating an environment of lawlessness among the youths of the region. Saikia alleged that the Nazira Police was silent about the whereabouts of a truck laden with gutkha, which they had seized a couple of months ago.
He also expressed surprise over the fact that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who also holds the Home Ministry, has not taken any initiative to look into the allegations yet.
