GUWAHATI, July 29 - Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary today held a webinar to review the works of the Inland Water Transport (IWT) department.

During the webinar, Patowary said inland water transport plays an important role in transporting passengers and goods in the State and stressed prioritizing passengers safety at any cost and instructed all the IWT employees to keep a strict vigil in this regard.

He further directed the department to extend the last date of registration and availing of benefits under the Jibondinga Scheme to August 31.

Notably, the Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society is implementing the Assam Inland Water Transport Project with funding from the World Bank. As part of the project, a scheme has been prepared for boat owners named Jibondinga. The scheme aims at providing marine engines for boats registered in the Directorate of IWT, Assam, at subsidized rates of 70 per cent with additional incentives of 5 per cent and 10 per cent for women entrepreneurs and women self-help groups, respectively, for which capacity building will also be a part of the scheme.

Patowary appealed to all private boat owners and operators to avail the benefits of the incentives under the Jibondinga Scheme.
