Principal Secy asked to submit report

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked Principal Secretary KK Mittal to probe the Golaghat incident that involved personnel of the Nagaland Police and to submit the report to the State Government within seven days. The formal instruction in this regard was issued by the Chief Minister yesterday, said an official press release here.

It needs mention here that the armed personnel of the Nagaland Police had beaten up All Assam Students' Union (AASU) activists at Pholongoni in Golaghat district on September 15. The AASU activists were protesting against the failure of the Government to fulfill their longstanding demands on repair of roads, extending drinking water supply facilities, etc, by blocking the NH-39.

This led to serious repercussions throughout the State and several organisations, including the AASU, declared agitational programmes demanding punishment to the guilty Nagaland Police personnel. The AASU has even launched an economic blockade against Nagaland in case the guilty police personnel are not punished.

The Chief Minister on September 16 had ordered the Chief Secretary to institute an inquiry into the incident and submit the report to him soon. Yesterday, the Chief Minister ordered KK Mittal to go into the incident.

The official press release said that the Golaghat district administration has by this time submitted its report on the incident to the State Government as directed by the Chief Minister.

Commissioner, Home, Jishnu Barua has also taken up the matter with his Nagaland counterpart to initiate necessary steps to bring the guilty to book, said the press release.
