SILCHAR, Sept 7 - Ashok Kumar Das, principal of Rabindrasadan Girls� College in Karimganj, was today arrested by the police on charges of alleged molestation of, and assault on students in his chamber.
Senior police officials said the principal was taken into custody after an FIR was lodged before Karimganj SP Gaurav Upadhyay by seven students of the girls� college, alleging that Das had sent obscene messages on WhatsApp and Facebook to some students and had even attempted to make video calls to them in the last few days.
�The principal had sent vulgar texts to the students on the social media and attacked some of them when they went to his room in the college to discuss the students� body election during the scrutiny of nomination papers,� a section of the aggrieved students said.
Alleging misbehaviour meted out to the students who went to discuss matters relating to the college election, slated for September 12, the students gheraoed the principal and locked him inside his room.
According to sources, some students also vandalised the chamber of the principal during which at least six girls were injured.
Additional SP Leena Doley rushed to the college and arrested Ashok Kumar Das. After initial interrogation, Das was produced before the court and later sent to judicial custody.
The police have registered a case against the principal under Sections 352/354 (B) of the IPC R/W IPC 67/67 (A)m. The situation has been brought under control and peace has been restored, the Karimganj SP said.
