GUWAHATI, Nov 19 - State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today asked the educational institutions, specially colleges and universities of the State, to prepare the students to face the real life challenges with a contemporary approach, rather than just following the syllabus.
Laying the foundation stone of an open stage at the RG Baruah College in the city, the minister asked the educational institutes to become the nerve centre of a renaissance among the youth, where they are equipped with the kind of knowledge required to compete nationally and globally.
Speaking on the reforms required in the field of education, Sarma said that policies or the government alone cannot bring the desired changes unless there is synchronization between the teachers, students and the process of knowledge imparting.
The Education Minister also announced a grant of Rs 1 crore to the college for its infrastructure development.
Our college authorities, governing bodies and the teachers have a major role to play in making the students understand the need to prepare for the future. What is happening in our surroundings, from the fallout of US presidential polls to the impact of demonetisation in India, they must be aware of the current affairs, he said.
The students must be well versed in languages like Hindi and English to be able to work anywhere in the country without language blockade, he said.
The open stage in the memory of Parag Sarma has been donated by his wife and a teacher of the college Dr Malabika Sarma.
Earlier, delivering the welcome speech, Dr Babita Choudhury, principal of the college, said that other than its curricular and co-curricular activities, the college is engaged in many social services, including taking special classes for class IX and X students. She further added that the college needed more classrooms and arrangement for sufficient drinking water.
Founder president of the college, Dr Phanidhar Kalita stressed the need to build a state-of-the-art auditorium in the college. Educationist Dr Dinesh Barua highlighted the need to have an Indian model of education in the country and asked the Minister to take up this issue at the national level.
