IMPHAL, July 1 - Prepaid water supply system will be introduced in Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) areas once the ongoing new water pipeline laying activities are completed by March next year, according to Public Health Engineering (PHE) department Chief Engineer Haobam Sunil.
The prepaid system has been taken up under the Central scheme � Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) for Imphal city to ensure that every household has access to a tap with assured supply of water and sewerage connection.
�So far, 65 per cent of the laying of water pipeline works in the IMC area has been completed,� said the PHE Chief Engineer. �The remaining works are expected to be completed within July, he added.�
The total cost of the project to be implemented across 27 IMC wards, is Rs 175.81 crore. So far, Rs 31.65 crore has been released as the first installment after the AMRUT scheme was launched in June 2015.
The PHE Chief Engineer was speaking to reporters in connection with the completion of four years of the three urban flagship missions including AMRUT, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban(PMAY-U), and Smart City Mission(SCM) here on Tuesday.
Currently, the demand for water in the Greater Imphal area is 125 million litres per day, against the installed capacity of 104 million litres per day of the more than a dozen existing water supply plants.
However, the gap will be covered once the water supply plant which is under construction at Chingkhei Ching in Imphal East district is completed, the Chief Engineer said.
Associate Town Planner M Manas of Town Planning department said that under PMAY-U, 27 towns (Urban Local Bodies) were approved by the Union Ministry which will cover 42,651 houses. By the end of May last, 900 houses were completed, whereas, 16,000 houses are reported to be in different stages of construction.
On Smart City Mission, Director of Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development Th Harikumar said that the Imphal Smart City is amongst the 100 cities in India under SCM. The projects under SCM includes development of Mall Road in Thangal Bazaar area, development of Imphal riverfront, installation of smart public toilets, augmentation of capacity of the existing solid waste management plant, etc.
