DIBRUGARH, Oct 10 - Assam�s strife torn Karbi Anglong could well be on the way to be famous for all the good reasons than the present law and order challenge the district throws up. The district is blinking furiously on the radar of geologists and the initial results are quite encouraging, to put it mildly. Already known for its proven reserves of lime and coal, the discovery of high value, high quality rare earth like platinum has made everybody look afresh into the district. .
Not uranium, but geologists have come across belts of rock formations in the Karbi Anglong district, containing platinum, titanium, vanadium and iron ores. A team of geologists of the Dibrugarh University, which made the discovery. Is hopeful of finding a rich reserve of precious and rare minerals in the locality.
The team of geologists were led by Professor Dilip Majumdar of the Department of Applied Geology. His teams�s findings and further investigations using the Scanning Electron Microscope, which is housed in the department�s Central Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre (CSIC), according to the varsity�s Joint Registrar (Academic), Dr Binod Borah.
Dr Borah has clarified that the Karbi Anglong discovery is of platinum, vanadium, titanium etc, and not uranium. He added that the Karbi Anglong district and its nearby areas could well turn out to be a rich depository of rare and high quality minerals.
