Pre-matric scholarship for ST students to be raised

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 - The State Government has decided to increase the pre-matriculation scholarship from Rs 25 to Rs 100 for the students belonging to Scheduled Tribes (ST) of the State studying between the first to 10th standard.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes Department yesterday, which was presided over by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

In order to identify the talents from rural areas for honing their skills by imparting training, Sonowal directed various development boards to take steps for giving impetus to sports and cultural activities. The sporting talents identified locally would be placed under the wings of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department which would take responsibility to develop their skills further through advanced training, Sonowal said.

The Chief Minister also directed the Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes Department to take action for imparting vocational training to 1,000 ST students in line with the SC students of the State. Sonowal also directed the department to construct multipurpose community halls in those areas, where there is more than 50 percent ST and SC population, so that youth of those areas can be encouraged in the fields of sports, culture, etc.

Minister for Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes Pramila Rani Brahma, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department Rajib Bora, Commissioner and Secretary to Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia were present in the meeting, among others.
