Prawn seed hatchery inaugurated

GUWAHATI, Aug 11 � For the first time in the State, a fresh water prawn seed hatchery has been inaugurated today at the Directorate of Fisheries located at Gopinath Nagar.

State Fishery Minister Nurjamal Sarkar formally inaugurated the hatchery at a function, which was also attended by PK Barthakur, commissioner and secretary, Fishery department, Dr Dilip Kumar, director, Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, I Haque and director of Fisheries, Assam among others.

The hatchery has been established under technical supervision of Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai and financial assistance from Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana and National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad.

It needs mention that though prawn rearing practice is popular in the State to some extent, seed constraint was the major problem and such type of hatchery is expected to overcome the problem.

The annual production capacity of the cycle is about 2-3 million per year and the estimated cost is around 25 lakh, a press release stated.

Dr AK Reddy, Senior Scientists, Central Institute of Fisheries Education will be the technical adviser of the hatchery.
