Pranab Baruah Award to Jiten Hazarika

GUWAHATI, Dec 31 � The Pranab Barua Award for the year 2011 has been conferred on noted artist Jiten Hazarika. The award is given to the artistes contributing towards development of the society through painting and sculpture.

Instituted in the memory of artist Pranab Barua, the award is given every year to the artistes of the NE Region on February 22, which observed as Rang Tulikar Din. The award consists of a trophy, a citation and cash Rs 25,000.

This award started from the year 2002 and many renowned artistes of the State including Shobha Brahma, Benu Misra, Nilapawan Barua, Aadya Sarma, Biren Singha among others have received this award, a statement mentioned.

Jiten Hazarika was born in the year 1936 in Hatichong of Nagaon district. He passed ISC from the Cotton College and B Tech from the Assam Engineering College. He took voluntary retirement from the post of Colonel in the engineering wing of the armed forces and took up paining as his career.

Till now Hazarika has conducted 21 solo painting exhibitions in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh among other cities. His exhibition in the Americam Museum of Fine Arts, Browns Ville (Texas) in 2005 was appreciated by the art lovers. He is a visiting professor in the Asian Institute of Film and Television.
