Pramilas action against carbon industry

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, June 13 - Forest and Environment Minister, Pramila Rani Brahma paid a sudden visit to Kajalgaon in Chirang district on Sunday and forced the authority of Brahmaputra Carbon Resource Private Limited to shut down the industry with immediate effect.

The local residents near the industry had filed a public Interest litigation in the High Court against the industry last year for polluting the residential area. Accordingly, the court had ordered the closure of the industry in public interest. But the industry, which is located at ward no. 3 of Kajalgaon, allegedly did not follow the orders.

On Sunday, the minister during her visit took this step against the industry.

Mentionably, one more carbon industry has been functioning in Kajalgaon area near Sundari in the district. But the minister failed to take notice of its impact of pollution on farmlands around it.

In Bongaigaon district head quarter, a carbon industry, named Brahmaputra Carbon Limited, has been functioning since long. It is located amid a residential area of new Bongaigaon and Dolaigaon.

Residents around the industry had failed to get the response of the Pollution Control Board and the government against the industry despite several pleas.

The heavy carbon pollution caused by the industry has been causing immense health problems to the residents since its opening.

So, the people of Kajalgaon and new Bongaigaon area demanded similar action by the minister against all the carbon industries of Bongaigaon and Chirang district in order to ensure a clean atmosphere for the common people.
