TEZPUR, Dec 28 - Noted academician and social worker of Thelamara area under Naharbari Mouza in Sonitpur district, Prabhat Chandra Dutta passed away last night at around 9.30 pm at his Thelamara residence following a protracted illness. He was 77.
Born on November 1, 1943 at Kadamtal area in Dibrugarh, late Dutta after his schooling shifted to Pratapgarh Tea Estate in Biswanath Chariali under undivided Sonitpur district wherein he completed his HSLC and HS final examinations. He took his graduation from Biswanath College. After graduation, he joined as an assistant teacher in Chandranath Sharma Higher Secondary School in Bihaguri area. After serving there for a few years, he served in Jugal High School. During the 70s, he joined Thelamara High School and served as head of the institute for a long stint and gave a new dimension to it, thereby establishing it as a frontline academic institute of the greater area. As an outcome of his perseverance, the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary level during 1995-96.
A devoted social worker, late Dutta along with a few other noted personalities, namely late Kanak Chandra Boro, late Shanti Ranjan Hazarika and Pankaj Dev Ray restored peace and communal harmony among the different communities in Dhekiajuli and Barchala LACs during the 1983 communal riot following the Assam Agitation.
Only because of his unmatched contribution towards Bapuji Bhawan, it still stands tall in the area even today. His demise was widely mourned.
His last rites were performed today in the presence of many admirers.
