�Power potential NE�s greatest asset�

SHILLONG, June 3 � The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy 2009-10 has stressed on the vast power potential of North-East as the greatest asset of the region.

The committee was here to hold review meetings with representatives of NEEPCO, NHPC and Power Grid on the power generation scenario in the region.

�A meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy 2009-10 was held and the reports would be submitted soon,� KS Rao, chairman of the committee, who led a team of 10 members of Parliament here yesterday, said.

Maintaining that the power scenario was improving in NE, he said, �Hydel potential is extremely high in Arunachal Pradesh. Also we have potential in other States and it is one of the greatest asset of NE. There are lots of plan to develop power in NE.�

IP Baruah, CMD of NEEPCO, said the committee will submit its report to the parliament, though no timeframe is prescribed for it.

Terming Arunachal Pradesh the power house of NE, he said, �They have 50,000 MW of hydro potential and nothing has been harnessed so far. NEEPCO is the only central agency that has installed capacity of 405 MW. We are executing about 700 MW hydo-power project, which will come in next three years.�

�As far as hydro power project is concerned, we have to sign an MoU with Meghalaya government for 84 MW Myntdu hydel project. In Mizoram we have signed 1500 MW hydel project 3 months back,� Baruah said. � PTI
