SILCHAR, Jan 10 - Ahead of Magh Bihu and Makar Sankranti, the Cachar district unit of the Sadou Assam Zila Prashasan Karmachari Sanstha organised a three-day Poush Mela at Silchar, which got under way on Wednesday.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner Barnali Sarma inaugurated the event at the Dak Bungalow premises.
Speaking at the first such multi-cuisine local food festival � Poush Mela 2020, Sarma said, �I am happy to attend the ceremony in the month which brings delight to cultivators. It is a month of colourful rituals and festivals, including Magh Bihu and Makar Sankranti. The programme initiated by the Cachar district unit of the Karmachari Sanstha is a great occasion for all of us to come together to cherish the variety of our food and also to help the upcoming generation know about their culture, rich history and identity.�
The organisers have put up 12 stalls of local delicacies including Assamese, Bengali, Dimasa and Manipuri food items. Locally-made and designed apparel is also on sale.
Expressing happiness, Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul said such events help boost unity among people and hoped that the Poush Mela shall foster the spirit of brotherhood across the society. DDC JR Lalsim, Additional SP (HQ) Jagadish Das, ADCs AR Mazumder, Rajiv Roy, Assistant Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, Excise Superintendent Sunil Sinha were also present on the occasion. Bikramjit Chakraborty, president of the district unit and general secretary of the state body of the Sanstha, thanked everyone for their support.
