Poulomi, Sharath champions

GUWAHATI, Feb 16 � Former champion Poulomi Ghatak clinched her sixth national title, while defending champion and India number one A Sharath Kamal got his fifth crown in the OIL 71st Senior National and Inter State Table Tennis Championship which concluded at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here this evening.

Executing some brilliant skills, Poulomi regained the title after a gap of one year defeating top seed K Shamini, both PSPB, 6-11, 11-5, 11-13, 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9 in a gruelling battle of full seven matches.

In the men�s singles final, it was a relatively easy match for lanky Sharath Kamal who overpowered Sourav Chakraborty 11-3, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9.

Sharath was in control from the first match onwards and took the first two matches comprehensively leaving not much room for Sourav. But due to over confidence, he gave some negative points in the third match which caused him dear. However, he made up for his mistakes in the next two matches and bagged the crown in the fifth match.

Poulomi, on the other hand used her experience against defending champion and her PSPB teammate Shamini who was cool throughout the championship matches. Displaying some superb techniques, Shalini kept the ball on the table on most of the occasion and forced Poulomi to make some unforced errors. But the five times champion was not a easy nut to crack. She was more aggressive in comparison to her opponent and unleashed some beautiful jabs which earned her some valuable points at crucial junctures.

Earlier, last night Subhajit Saha, pairing with his wife Nandita Saha defeated Sourav Chakraborty-Mouma Das 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 to win the mixed-doubles title.

In the closing function, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was present as chief guest. State Forest Minister and president of the Assam Table Tennis Association (ATTA) Rockybul Hussain, TTFI secretary general Dhanraj Choudhury, The Assam Tribune Editor PG Baruah, Sports Director Sanjeeb Gohain Baruah and Stag India Ltd official Vivek Kohli were also present on the occasion.

The TTFI secretary praised the ATTA for successfully organising the mega event where a record number of 37 teams took part. ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah welcomed the gathering and gave details of the championship.
