GUWAHATI, Sept 1 There is adequate supply of potatoes available in the city and there is no reason for any panic, the Kamrup Metro district administration said today.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu said the latest incidents in the city leading to panic in the market are due to speculative reports and potato supplies are regularly coming into the city.

This is purely speculative. There is no shortage of potatoes in the city and the situation is being constantly monitored, Dr Angamuthu said.

He added, Besides, supplies are coming from outside. Currently, there are over 10,600 bags of potatoes available in the citys wholesale market. Each bag contains 50 kgs of the precious kitchen staple.

Angamuthu said district administration and Food and Civil Supply staff are constantly monitoring the situation and said action would be taken against any wholesaler or retailer found to be engaging in hoarding or over-charging.

It is noteworthy that potato prices have witnessed a jump in the citys markets following reports about West Bengal prohibiting supplies to its neighbouring States, including Assam.
