JORHAT, March 12 - After the Election Commission on Sunday declared the schedule of holding the Lok Sabha elections in seven phases, the Majuli island district administration yesterday swung into action to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) framed by the Election Commission and removed altogether 167 posters, banners and hoardings.
The Majuli Assembly seat is a part of the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency spreading over Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and a few areas of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts.
A Majuli district administration official told this newspaper that as per the direction of the Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra, who is also the District Election Officer, the administrative staff removed posters, banners, hoardings and writings on the walls belonging to political parties from Government buildings, properties and public places.
A few hoardings were removed from posts having power supply cables, the official added.
The official said that Majuli Revenue Circle Officer Ajit Sarmah has been appointed by the Deputy Commissioner to head the team to see full implementation of the Model Code of Conduct and the first day�s drive was carried out by several teams constituted for the purpose under Sarma�s supervision.
The drive was carried out in Garmur, Balichapori, Karatipar, Bangaon, Raunapar, Phulani, Jengraimukh and Nayabazar areas of the Brahmaputra island from 10 am to 6 pm.
Altogether 167 posters, banners and hoardings were removed and writings on the walls were erased from 112 places, the official stated.
It may be mentioned here that Majuli Assembly seat is at present represented by Chief Minister Sarabananda Sonowal and the incumbent Lakhimpur MP is Pradan Baruah of BJP, who was a former BJP MLA from Dhemaji. He represented the Congress party from Jonai seat from 2011 to 2016.
