Post-Idd celebrations cancelled in Silchar

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, July 9 - Idd-ul-Fitr was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervour in Cachar district. People were seen exchanging Idd greetings and sweets at different places after offering prayers.

However, following the brutal killing of religious minorities in Bangladesh, the Central Idd Celebration Committee of Silchar has decided to cancel the post-Idd celebrations this year.

Condemning the atrocities in the neighbouring country, Milan Uddin Laskar, president of the celebration committee said, Like yesteryears, we were preparing for the Idd celebrations with guest artistes from Bangladesh. But, the members of the committee feel that in the wake of the mayhem in which many lives were lost, it would not be right to organise any function to celebrate the occasion. Hence, we decided to cancel the event scheduled to be held on Sunday.

On the other hand, the Muslims after the Idd prayers across all the mosques in the district thoroughly condemned the killings in Bangladesh. A rally against terrorism was taken out at Bhagabazar after the Idd prayers on Thursday.

A meeting was also organised at the Itkhola idgah in which Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, Cachar Deputy Commissioner S Viswanathan, Silchar civic board chairman NN Tagore and other leading citizens took part to condemn the spate of terrorist activities in Bangladesh.
