Poor civic facilities irk Silchar residents

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Jan 15 - Disgusted with the pathetic state of civic affairs, haggard residents of the second-largest urban sprawl flayed the civic board here claiming that the chairman of the board was highly ignorant about the ground realities.

Taking their annoyance to the streets, citizens under the banner of Nagarik Swartharaksha Sangram Parishad staged a protest outside the office of the chairman inside the Silchar Municipal Board office on Friday and shouted slogans to condemn the inefficiency of the board.

The civic board has utterly failed to fulfil its promise to maintain a clean city. From imposing fine for improper disposal of garbage, door-to-door garbage collection to drainage clearance, the promises made by the board are far from being fulfilled.

The chairman, it may be mentioned, is in watch-in-sleep mode and has no idea about the sufferings of the tax-paying public, which is disgusting, to say the least, said Haridas Dutta, general secretary of the citizens forum.

Meanwhile, NN Tagore, chairman of the civic board has denied the concerns raised by the forum saying that drains within the municipal jurisdiction are cleared on a routine basis.

Speaking on the solid waste management project, Tagore said, Rs 3 crore is already been sanctioned for the purpose. But paper works for release of funds, which is within the purview of the district administration, is taking time for execution.
