DIBRUGARH, Aug 16 - The 73rd Independence Day was centrally celebrated with a day-long event at the Chowkidinghee Ground here. Minister for Commerce and Industries and Transport Chandra Mohan Patowary hoisted the Tricolour and addressed the gathering.
The Minister also took the salute from several contingents of Assam Police, Home Guards, NCC, Scouts & Guides and other contingents, including school children. The flag hoisting ceremony was followed by felicitation, cultural programme and sports events.
Deputy Commissioner Pallab Gopal Jha, Superintendent of Police Subashini Sankaran, MLAs Prasanta Phukan and Rituparna Baruah also accompanied the Minister.��
On the occasion, the district administration also felicitated several individuals for making valuable contributions towards the society in the fields of sports, literature, media and culture.
One time financial grant recipients and newly selected pensioners like Indra Konwar, Preetiranjan Das, Mukti Singh Lohar, Bon Gohain, Khargapani Barman, Bhimkanta Konwar, Prasenjit Kumar Goswami, Numal Saikia, Pranab Baruah, Subhash Chetia, Rohila Mech Hazarika, Loknath Gogoi, Sambunath Karmakar, Arun Borthakur, Prodip Kumar Sharma, Manindra Nath Saikia, Nikhil Ranjan Deb and Ikbal Ahmed were felicitated on the occasion.
Purnananda Bharali received the Chief Minister Best Community Service Award for his contribution towards making the city clean and green. Small tea grower Dulal Dutta received the Commissioner�s Medal. The administration also felicitated sportspersons Isharani Baruah and Gayatri Gurung.
On the occasion, prizes were also given away to the winners who took part in the Independence Day essay, quiz and art competitions.
In keeping with the tradition, the district administration distributed fruits among the inmates of the Central Jail and the patients of Assam Medical College and Hospital in the afternoon.
A friendly football match between DC XI and Dibrugarh District Sports Association (DDSA) XI was also organised on the occasion.
All public and private sector industries in the district and dozens of associations and organisations have informed that they celebrated Independence Day with due fervour.
IN SIVASAGAR: Unfurling the Tricolour at the Sivasagar Boarding Field, Minister for Tourism and Welfare of Other Backward Classes Chandan Brahma said the NDA Government has created a conducive atmosphere for education and is all set to make it a global hub for quality education.
He said the Sonowal government in the State will continue to forge ahead in developing Assam in all spheres. The Minister said the government welcomed positive criticism as it helps inclusive development.
Earlier, the Minister accompanied by Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Dr Laksmanan S paid floral tributes at the statue of legendary martyr Piyali Phukan, located beside the Sivasagar Borpukhuri Paar. Piyali Phukan was hanged by the British in 1830 for plotting to overthrow them.
IN TEZPUR: Besides the district administration, different organisations too celebrated the day with pomp and gaiety here.
In the Church Field here, Minister for Handloom and Textile Ranjit Dutta unfurled the national flag and took the salute from the ITBP, Assam Police, Home Guard, NCC, Darrang College, Tezpur Don Bosco High School, St Joseph Convent School, Tezpur Academy School, etc.
In his speech, the Minister spoke on the developments witnessed during the BJP regime. A host of personalities having contribution towards media, culture, education, agriculture, etc., were warmly felicitated by the district administration.
In the programme, along with the local MLA Brindaban Goswami, Sonitpur DC Narshing Pawar, among others, were present. Cultural programmes on nationalism by various cultural groups, including Don Bosco School here mesmerised everyone.
Moreover, in Chitrabon Bakori (earlier it was Idgah Field), under the initiative Bharatmata Pujan Samiti, Tezpur DC Narshing Pawar unfurled the national flag.
On the other hand, in connection with the day, Divisional Forest Office for the West Division organised a felicitation programme wherein a handful of selected persons who had rendered service to the Forest department in mitigating man-elephant conflict in the district and other wildlife issues were felicitated.
IN KOKRAJHAR: The day was observed at Kokrajhar with a daylong colourful programme.
BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary unfurled the Tricolour at the Govt HS and MP School playground amidst a huge gathering.
Addressing the gathering, Mohilary said the decision of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revoke Article 370 was laudable. He further said it was a historic win for the people of India as people of the same country did not get any facility in Jammu and Kashmir. But after revoking the article, people there now would be able to enjoy all rights and privileges.
Mohilary said the decision of revoking Article 370 could be translated into reality because of the strong will of Narendra Modi and his team. He also hailed the move for the creation of Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
At the same time, Mohilary also said a section of vested interests always tries to destabilise peace in BTC area and appealed to all irrespective of caste and creed to remain united for the greater cause of peace and development of this region.
He further appealed to the ULFA, NDFB and all other armed groups to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream.
