DHUBRI, Aug 22 - The Dhubri district administration has completely banned the use of polythene bags in the entire district by an order. The order clearly mentions that it prohibits manufacture, stock, distribute or sell carry bags made of virgin or recycled polythene bags or compostable plastic, which is less than 50 microns in thickness. The order passed under section 144 of Cr PC further states that no person shall use carry bags or container made of recycled plastic or biodegradable plastic for storing, carrying, dispensing or packaging of food stuff. The violation of the order shall be punishable under Provision of Section 188 IPC and under the relevant provision of laws.

The Deputy Commissioner, while passing the order said, Large-scale use of plastic bags, plastic bottles, food containers, packaging materials and other such materials are polluting the environment which have become a matter of concern.

He added that these plastic bags are harmful and have made a huge impact on the environment.

The use of polythene and dumping of plastic materials are damaging roads, reducing the natural beauty of the town and is responsible for pollution, the DC said in the order.

Meanwhile, the people of the district have hailed the initiative saying it is a major step towards environment protection.

This should have been done earlier, as such plastics are deteriorating not only the beauty of the towns but also creating many civic issues in the town, especially in Dhubri, said Biswajit Saha a retired school teacher of Mission Road area.
