Poll violence at Kalaigaon, 3 injured in police firing

Kalaigaon, April 2: Three persons were injured in police firing at a polling station situated in Rajapukhuripar LP school near Kalaigaon in 65 Kalaigaon constituency in Udalguri district on April 1 at 8 pm.

According to information, the violence took place after allegations discrepancies raised by voters. People present during the police firing said that after completion of voting the seal and signature were not done by polling officials.

They also alleged that EVM machines were not closed properly. Locals also alleged that an EVM machine was misplaced in the process. Agents and some voters did not allow the polling officials to shift the EVMs to vehicles.

There was a scuffle and heated argument between the presiding officer and locals and the situation was nearly out of control. Security personnel resorted shooting at the crowd after lathi charge had failed to control the unruly mob.

One Ismail Hussain was seriously injured in the firing.Two other persons namely-Mosaruddin Ahmed and Hasmat Ali also sustained bullet injury during the incident.All the three injured persons were rushed to GMCH for treatment.
