Poll percentage in Jorhat LS seat goes up to 77.49

JORHAT, April 12 - The final poll percentage for the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency (number 12) is 77.49 as per the information released by the Jorhat district administration here today.

The Jorhat parliamentary constituency comprises 10 Assembly seats spread over Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, having Jorhat Deputy Commissioner as the Returning Officer.

Yesterday, the administration had stated that the poll percentage was 74.87 as per reports received from the polling stations till 5 pm.

As per the data released by the Jorhat district administration, the Sonari Assembly constituency with 81.01 per cent recorded the highest poll percentage among the 10 LACs of Jorhat parliamentary seat, followed by Thowra Assembly constituency recording 81 per cent.

Jorhat Assembly constituency recorded the lowest poll percentage at 72.34 among the all the LACs.

The data stated that the total number of votes polled in the entire Jorhat parliamentary constituency is 10,54,175.

The data stated that there was one vote cast by a third gender in the entire Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, but the administration has not mentioned the Assembly from which the vote was polled.

It may be mentioned here that the Sonari Assembly seat is at present represented by Topon Kumar Gogoi, who is the Assam Minister of State (Independent charge) for Power and also a former AASU leader, and is the saffron party candidate for the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.

Gogoi, was selected as the candidate for Jorhat parliamentary seat by the party replacing the incumbent Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa.

His (Gogoi) opponent from the Congress party is Sushanta Borgohain, a youth leader and a former Parliamentary Secretary of Home Department in the last Tarun Gogoi-led Government.

He was the MLA from Thowra from 2011 to 2016. Borgohain lost the Thowra constituency in the 2016 Assembly elections to Kushal Deuri of BJP.

The incumbent legislator of the Jorhat Assembly seat is Hitendra Nath Goswami of the BJP, who is the incumbent Assembly Speaker.

Altogether the fate of eight candidates for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat was sealed yesterday by the voters.

Kanak Gogoi from CPI, Rajkumar Duwarah from All India Forward Block, Ribulaya Gogoi from All India Trinamool Congress and Kamala Rajkonwar from NPP were in the fray while two Independent candidates � Arbin Kumar Baruah and Nandita Nag � were also in the contest.
