Political parties demand movement against graft

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 7 Members of five political parties- CPI, CPM, RSP, AIFB and Janata Dal (S) today staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (metro) demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the financial irregularities in all departments of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council. The parties also demanded action against all those involved in the financial scams in the Hill district and said that immediate steps should be taken to check corruption in all levels of administration.

In a joint statement, the parties alleged that the Tarun Gogoi Government in the State was trying to protect those involved in the financial scam in NC Hills. The parties pointed out that the Government should have initiated immediate action to bring those involved in the financial scam to book after the scam came out in the open, but instead of doing so, efforts were made to suppress the issue. The recent special audit by the Office of the Accountant General exposed that largescale irregularities took place in NC Hills and the Government sent huge amounts in excess of Budget provisions to the Council.

As the Minister in charge of the Finance Department, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi cannot escape his responsibility for the misappropriation of funds and sending of excess funds to the Council, it added.
