Political meddling detriment to growth of cooperative movement

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Oct 31 - Political interference is the main impeding factor in the growth of the cooperative movement in Assam, said Dr Pranab Baishya, faculty member of the Institute of Cooperative Management, Guwahati.

Dr Baishya was delivering a talk on Role of Cooperatives in boosting the rural economy vis--vis Assam, organised by the Guwahati Management Association (GMA) through video conference as part of its monthly talks programme here today, said a press release.

Presenting a bleak picture of the cooperatives in the State, Dr Baishya said, Politicians have been misusing the cooperatives for their own benefit.

Lamenting the missed opportunities of using the cooperative movement for boosting the rural economy and generating employment, Dr Baishya also cited lack of awareness and mismanagement as other reasons for failure of the cooperatives. He ascribed the large scale migration of rural youths of Assam to metros to the failure of the cooperative movement to bring about a transformation of the rural economy in the State.

The programme was presided over by GMA president SB Sarma. Joint secretary Bibhuti Dutta introduced the speaker to the members including overseas members from USA and Hongkong. GMA director Parag Phukan offered the vote of thanks, the release added.
