Political interference in transfer of police officials

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Oct 4 - Leader of Opposition from the Congress, Mukul Sangma has sought a State Security Commission meeting to discuss the political interference in the transfer of police officials in the last few months. In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the Congress leader said: I am writing to bring to your notice that in the last few months, a number of haphazard and irregular transfers of police officers across different ranks and files have been effected.

Sangma added that the development has vitiated the environment in the whole Police Organisation, as most of these transfers have been an outcome of political interference. He further said that the police organisation plays a crucial role in the whole process of Administration of Justice, besides undertaking various other responsibilities of attending to the call of duty as per the mandate of law.

This whole action resorted to by the authorities due to political interference is in contravention of the provisions of the Meghalaya Police Act 2010, creating an unhealthy precedence which will have a serious bearing in the whole process of administration of justice, Sangma cautioned.

The Congress leader had raised the matter during the recently concluded Autumn Session of the Assembly.
