Political conspiracy behind raid: Rakibul

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 20 - Welcoming the recalling of the Election Expenditure Observer Raghavendra Singh by the Election Commission for transgressing his official jurisdiction while conducting a raid at his residence, senior Congress leader Rakibul Hussain today said that the ECs action exposed that there was a political conspiracy behind the episode to defame him and the Congress party.

Addressing the media, Hussain said that an opposition party was getting increasingly nervous about its dwindling popularity and hence was resorting to foul play in a desperate bid to gain political mileage ahead of the Assembly elections.

Hussain added that he was seeking legal opinion on the issue as it had damaged his dignity and reputation and would soon approach the court.

Hussain also said that he wanted an impartial inquiry into the mysterious matter concerning the forged number plate of the vehicle used by the Expenditure Observer on the day of the raid.

I was told by a returning officer that the information concerning the wrong number plate was false, but later it turned out to be true.

In that case, if wrong information was provided to him by someone in the Transport Department or the DTO office, what action is being initiated on the erring official? Only an impartial inquiry will clear up the matter, Hussain said, adding that use of false number plates in government vehicles reminded one of the infamous secret killings.
