By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 24 In what could well expose the lack of any monitoring mechanism in the Education department of the State, the Assam Police has stumbled upon clues that might well bring to the fore mushrooming of several fake and unauthorized private educational institutes in the State, including the city.

This, if unearthed, would leave hundreds of students with aspiring careers in various fields in the lurch, not to mention about the huge amount of money spent as tuition fees.

Police sources here have claimed that it has information about various groups of people indulging in such activities across the State and it is working on the clues to unmask the nexus.

The investigators are also reviewing the authenticity of various private educational institutes, especially in areas where awareness about the legitimacy of an educational institute is limited.

We are cautiously getting into the roots of the nexus and very soon something must come out, a senior Assam Police official said.

It needs mention here that the Criminal Investigation Department(CID) had arrested three persons, including the lady director of a private distance education centre from the city for allegedly supplying fake marksheets and other relevant documents.

It had also seized a number of rubber stamps that were allegedly in the name of reputed institutes by the group.

A senior official of the CID, when asked, said that the group indulging in the illegal activities for the last several months has allegedly duped a number of students from across the region, including those hailing neighbouring States.

He also went on to inform that the investigators are on the lookout for a few other people involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, PK Das, a retired State Government employee and an aggrieved guardian, said that apart from those running the nexus, the Government must also be held responsible for the existing scenario.

There is no mechanism to check the unhealthy growth of such institutes and every day people are being duped in the name of prosperous future and guaranteed placement, he rued.
