By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, March 25 - The first day of the lockdown in the district here passed off without much commotion although law enforcers had to use baton in some areas to ward off people from roads and market areas in view of the coronavirus threat.

Police had to resort to caning after people failed to obey the lockdown rules despite extensive publicity and prior appeals.

Several people were caned in areas like Naliapool, Marwaripatty, Santipara, Thana Chariali, Chowkidinghee and Chiring Chapori.

It needs to be mentioned here that Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and Superintendent of Police Sreejith T came out on the streets yesterday evening to impose the lockdown and since then the law enforcers are out on the streets to ensure total lockdown in the city and elsewhere in the district.

Police patrol teams are doing rounds of the city roads as also in major roads to ensure that people do not come out of their homes.
