Police to use choppers to step up vigil

By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, March 23 With the poll fever intensifying across the country, Assam Police too is gearing up to meet the emerging challenges that might arise, this time with improved logistics.

Police, this time, has kept the provision of introduction of special chopper service to keep vigil in areas which may turn sensitive.

Official sources told this reporter that the chopper service would mainly be used in sensitive polling areas as per requirement. The three-phased Lok Sabha polls will begin from April 7.

Specially trained personnel will be attached with the choppers that would be provided by the Government of India.

Director General of Assam Police, Khagen Sarma told this reporter that initially two choppers would be attached with the Assam Police, which would be put to use as and when the situation demands.

We need to be equipped with the best available logistics support to ensure that the ensuing polls are peaceful. The choppers would basically be put to use in case of emergency situations for quick response, Sarma said.

He also stated that security arrangements for the ensuing polls would be reviewed from time to time and no stone would be left unturned to ensure peaceful polls.

It has also been learnt that availability of chopper service has been a problem, with most of them being already hired for ferrying political bigwigs.
