GUWAHATI, June 9 - To add teeth to its existing security net, especially concerning corporate set-ups, industries, shopping malls and other vital installations, the Assam Police has decided to maintain an online database of private security guards in the State under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
The idea behind the move is to keep a track of the functioning of the private security agencies and verify the antecedents of private security guards, besides monitoring their conduct on a periodical basis.
Further, the Assam Police headquarters will also maintain a record of firearms being used by private security agencies.
The project was recently given a go-ahead under the CCTNS and is expected to be rolled out in the State by the end of July. To start with, the pilot project would kick-start from Guwahati, Assam Police sources said.
As per the new plan-of-action, the security mechanism of all the major installations, movie halls, banks, marketplaces, and shopping malls, would be reviewed from time to time and the managements of private properties too have been asked to adhere to the prescribed guidelines in terms of maintaining internal security chain.
Once the database is prepared, all the private security agencies will have to send a periodical report on their workforce, sources pointed out, adding that the Assam Police headquarters would regularly assess the compliance level.
Sources also stated that there is no official up-to-date record available vis--vis the number of private security agencies operating in the State. Efforts are on to bring them under one roof and set some sort of accountability on their part.
As per the proposed regulation, the security guard will have to get his antecedents verified by the local police before being engaged with any set-up, sources said.
With the existing manpower crunch faced by the Assam Police, private security guards have become a very important component of our security set-up. It is, therefore, equally important to raise the level of efficiency of the private security guards, sources pointed out, adding that the demand for private security guards is fast growing.
