Police to crack down on land mafias

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 22 The Assam Police is likely to crack down on land mafias operating in the State, especially in and around Guwahati, and a list of such persons against whom cases have already been registered is being prepared.

In the wake of increasing number of case relating to land grabbing and land dispute, we are contemplating tightening the noose on the land mafias. However, the plan of action to tackle the menace is yet to be finalised, sources in the police department stated.

Sources, while conceding that the land mafias are an influential lot, stated the new action plan will ensure that concrete evidence is gathered against the person concerned before making any move.

The police department is also reviewing the nature of the recent land grabbing cases reported in and around the city.

We have asked the police stations to report about some specific names allegedly running the land-grabbing racket, the sources asserted.

Asked whether the investigation into the Sonapur incident where five members of a family were killed allegedly over the issue of land will also be reviewed, sources stated, The case is being investigated by the CID and there is no question of reviewing the investigation. Nevertheless, we would try to cash in on the findings of the investigation, if any, regarding the involvement of land mafias.

It needs mention here that though the CID had claimed to have zeroed in on the involvement of land mafias behind the killings, it has not yet succeeded in establishing the link.
