GUWAHATI, Oct 19 � As a preventive step, City Police has decided to expedite the process of execution of Non Bailable Warrants before the ensuing Durga Puja.
Police said, �If necessary, preventive arrests would also be made to ensure safety and security of the people during puja.�
Police has also launched drives against sale of illicit liq-uor, gambling and drink-driving.
Senior Superintendent of Police (City) AP Tiwari told media persons that an addi-tional manpower of 500 secu-rity personnel would be de-ployed in the city from Octo-ber 19, which will include two companies of paramilitary forces.
�Besides, puja committee volunteers, NCC cadets and students would assist in crowd management and maintaining law and order,� Tiwari said.
�The entire security ar-rangement has been planned in three phases. Pre-puja, dur-ing puja and immersion and the deployment would be made accordingly,� he stated.
Altogether, 475 Durga Puja pandals would be erected m and around the city this year and each one of them would have provisions for fire fight-ing and other emergency services.
�We had asked all the puja committees to install close circuit television and majority of the big pandals would have them installed. The committees have been briefed about the do�s and don�ts,� Tiwari said.
The SSP further said that although there is no specific threat perception, a general alert always remain in the city and the police is leaving no stone unturned to ensure peace.
�We are continuously as-sessing the situation and working on the information we have,� the SSP asserted.
