Police resort to blank fire at Sadiya

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 25 - Police had to resort to blank fire in order to free three people from the clutches of a group of irate public at Lakhyapur village at Burha-Burhi Gaon Panchyat under Sadiya Police Station today.

According to information available, three people came to the said village and identified themselves as priests. But the villagers assaulted them physically, suspecting them to be child-lifters. As police arrived at the scene, the irate public injured four of their personnel, following which the police resorted to blank fire to control the situation and to free the three people from the clutches of the public.

The three people under reference identified themselves as priests from Uttar Pradesh. They were subsequently admitted to the Sadiya FRU Hospital in critical condition, from where they were referred to Tinsukia Civil Hospital. The three have been identified as Paban Nath, Laxman Nath and Titu Nath. They later told police that they were priests and had come to Assam to perform Durga Puja.
