Police recover looted jewelleries, cash

IMPHAL, July 7 - Manipur police recovered jewelleries worth Rs 19 lakh from a pond at Charangpat of Thoubal district where six armed youths looted cash and jewelleries worth over Rs 2 crore from HDFC bank on July 4.

The recovery by Police commandos came after two accused in the daring bank robbery case were arrested. A report said the robbed jewelleries were recovered from the residential pond of accused Laishram Jayenta Singh yesterday. One scooter used in the robbery was also seized from his possession.

The police have already arrested one Thokchom Suresh Singh and Rs 1 lakh was recovered from him. Another accused Thiyam James surrendered himself before Yairipok Police on Thursday. Suresh and James are residents of Charangpat.

Earlier, the police recovered Rs 20,000 in cash from the possession of accused Dilip, now in police custody.

The looters armed with knives entered the bank branch located half a kilometre from Thoubal Police Station on July 4 around 5.30 pm after overpowering the security personnel and staff of the bank.
